I received this email in response to my posting of 'Winnipeg man recalls sighting', and found his story to be very interesting....

Name: Dr. Robert Alley
Email: roballey18@gmail.com
Comments: Candy, wonderful website!
I thank you for showing "Raincoast Sasquatch" and must say thank you for all you do. Reading Laurie's interview of archie m. re; Renwer sighting report of 1960..In 1969 i was baling hay with the Zbeetnoff family of Kamsack, Sask and spoke with 2 men who had been snowmachining north of Renwer at Swan Lk. proper, 3 yrs. prev., They stopped to stare at four huge mounds of snow that had puffs of steaming breath slowly rising from them at intervals, and did not think the mounds held bears, they retreated quickly. Best RA.BTW, I would like to contact Archie, if you know a way...Cheers!

I had asked Mr. Alley (author of Raincoast Sasquatch) if I could post his story, and this was his response...

Hello from Alaska,

You may put that brief report on the website. The curious report from snowmobilers from near Kamsack, specifically Norquay, was indeed unusual, and unfortunately I cannot locate them, but they made a point of saying that the mounds were about three or four feet high and eight feet across, and were not marked, there was no visible entrance. they reported no sounds.  I cannot attest to the veracity of the men , they were in their early twenties, one in his late teens, seems sincere, puzzled, and a bit disturbed by what they had reportedly seen. I could not get much detail from them, they said they started to approach on foot, apparently they were less than a hundred yards away initially. they did not walk around the mounds, so one a cannot exclude the possibility of an entrance. What is possible is that the snow simply fell on top of four sasquatches as they were resting or perhaps in a torpid sleep. No one can prove that sasquatches are not capable of hibernation any more than one can prove that they sometimes do. Athabascan ethnographic literature is fairly clear on the point that many Dene first nations in NWT, Yukon and Alaska attribute brushmen, woodsmen, sneakers, na-tina, nakentlia, etc. with a period of retiring to dens in winter, or simply state that the sleep through the winter. One may choose to ignore this large body of information, but the wisdom of Dene peoples collectively regarding the habits of virtually every known species of subarctic mammal is outstanding, ask any field biologist working there. Of course, survival courses teach individuals to cover themselves with powder snow to insulate them through an emergency, and I have spoken with a Tsimshian man who told me he got through a white-out on Hemlock mountain, Annette Island, AK, some years ago, by just sitting against a tree and letting the snow pile up over his blanket to a depth of a foot or more. He added  was visited in the night by something that approached him “on two legs, and just stood there over him, for a few minutes, he said he could hear it breathing as well, but he didn’t dare move, and it just walked away...” Cree information seems a little sketchier, but perhaps this is because of the association with Witigo, when the elders will even discuss that at all.. there may yet be some Cree informants who have a good knowledge of these things.

The men reported no tracks but I don’t have the exact date or weather conditions, so that doesn’t mean much, and it is not impossible that bears might sequester themselves under  a blanket of snow, but three or four of these mounds does not tally with even one sow and cubs, who stay in a family group, unless the other mounds were a couple of two-year olds hanging on. even that seems unlikely. A family unit of sasquatches would be hypothetically seek a remote location, but if there had not been much human presence around the lake since the previous fall, such behaviour might just be possible. Again, this is all speculative, and I don’t mean to make anything of it, but thought it was interesting. There is also an interesting article on hibernation physiology as it may relate to human genetics, based on research at North Carolina State University in 2000, conducted by Dr. Matthew Andrews and his team. You can google “human hibernation gene’ and find it or mail me. As a footnote, the Fat-tailed lemur of Madagascar is one prosimian that goes into periods of torpor to conserve energy, living of deposits of fat in its tail. I suppose anything can arise in evolution in the right circumstances...regards,RA.
